With record-breaking numbers of visitors arriving at the Holy Mosque in Makkah during the Holy Month of Ramadan to perform Umrah, the reliability of essential utilities becomes more apparent than ever. Supporting the continuous availability of Zamzam water services requires dependable infrastructure operating seamlessly behind the scenes.

Project Overview

A high-availability automation and monitoring system was required for the treatment plant responsible for managing drainage water from the Zamzam drinking fountains at Makkah Haram. The solution needed to ensure continuous plant operation, provide clear system visibility, and integrate effectively within the existing utilities environment.

Challenge

The drainage treatment plant required a resilient PLC-based control system capable of maintaining stable performance under varying demand conditions while supporting maintainability and operational transparency. Integration within an already operational utilities infrastructure added further complexity.

Solution

A Schneider Electric M580 PLC-based automation system was implemented to deliver reliable monitoring and control of the Zamzam fountain drainage treatment process. The Schneider Electric Modicon M580 is a next-generation ePAC designed for high-performance and mission-critical applications, offering native Ethernet architecture, advanced cybersecurity, and exceptional processing reliability. Its scalability, hot-swappable capabilities, and seamless integration within modern digital architectures make it an ideal platform for high-availability utility and infrastructure automation.

Our manufacturing scope included the integration and assembly of PLC cabinets in accordance with approved drawings, ensuring compliance, reliability, and ease of maintenance.

Results & Impact

  • High Availability: Continuous and reliable drainage treatment supporting Zamzam water services.

  • Improved Visibility: Centralized monitoring enhanced operational awareness and response.

  • Seamless Integration: Successful deployment within existing Haram utilities infrastructure.

  • Project Success: PLC cabinet integration and system implementation were delivered and commissioned for the Makkah Haram facility.

Conclusion

This project highlights the role of robust automation in sustaining critical water infrastructure at one of the world’s most significant religious destinations, helping ensure dependable Zamzam water services for millions of visitors.
